Recipes for Homemade Dog Treats

There are many good reasons to make your own treats for your dog at home

Not only is it fun to do, making it a nice activity to do with the kids on a rainy weekend, but you get to control what goes into the recipe. This will be of particular interest to owners whose dogs suffer from allergies or intolerances. What is more, you can be sure of limiting the amount of additives that may be present in some commercial treats, which puts you in charge of your dog’s health and wellbeing. Read below to discover our favorite recipes for homemade dog treats!

Frozen Peanut Butter Yoghurt Treats

These treats are perfect for the summer, when our dogs can get a little hot under the collar in the warm weather. Moreover, most dogs simply adore peanut butter, so they’re bound to go nuts for these delicious treats. Choose a vanilla yoghurt with live cultures to aid your dog’s gut flora. This will boost their immune health and digestion.

Dog Yogurt and Peanut Butter Treats

Ingredients

  • 900g vanilla yoghurt
  • 1 cup of peanut butter

Directions

Melt the peanut butter in the microwave. Combine the yoghurt and melted peanut butter. Pour the mixture into an ice cube tray or paper cake cases, and freeze.

Dog Biscuits

These easy-to-make dog biscuits can be easily customised to suit your dog’s tastes and nutritional needs. You can add or substitute with ingredients such as bacon, eggs, oats, cheese or broth.

Making Dog Biscuits

Ingredients

  • 2.5 cups of whole wheat flour (substitute oats or an alternative flour if your dog is sensitive)
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon of stock (beef or chicken are both tasty)
  • 0.5 cup of hot water

Directions

Preheat oven to 180°C. Dissolve the stock in hot water, then add the other ingredients. Knead the dough until it forms a ball. Roll dough to 1.5cm thick. Cut out shapes with a cookie cutter. Place on a lightly greased baking sheet and cook for 30 minutes or until nicely brown.

Peanut Butter and Pumpkin Balls

These healthy treats are as good for you as they are for your pets! Packed with vitamins, minerals and energy, these balls are so easy to make, you don’t even have to bake them.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of pumpkin (canned or freshly boiled)
  • 3 tablespoons of honey
  • 2.5 cups of oats
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 0.5 cup of natural peanut butter

Directions

Lay out baking parchment on a plate or tray. Combine the peanut butter, pumpkin, cinnamon and honey and mix. Then add the oats and mix well. If it seems too wet, add a few more oats. Roll the batter into balls, about the size of golf balls, and lay out on the baking parchment. Then simply refrigerate until hardened, then keep in an airtight container for up to 3 weeks, or freeze for up to 3 months.
